Right and left seem to be reversed, objects disappear before the watchful eye and sounds seem to go crazy. You can have fun finding out for yourself why and how our senses can be confused, focussed or distracted.
Permanent exhibitionincluded in the day ticket
Can you believe your eyes?
"Our senses are our window to the world - through ingenious experiments with tangible effects, guests can discover many a secret of the senses." - Michel Junge, Director of the phaeno
In the sensory area, you will experience your own body in a completely new way. Things disappear right before your eyes, sounds go crazy, right and left suddenly compete against each other - and in the middle of it all, you are the experiment. The motto here is: feel, marvel, try it out!
Whether children, young people, adults or entire school classes - this area makes perception tangible and shows how easily our senses can be confused, directed or tricked. Perfectly suited for the topic of perception, senses and physical experience.
What makes up the Sense division?
Your senses take centre stage here. You will find playful, sometimes surprisingly challenging exhibits that will turn your perception on its head. Instead of theory, there are real experiences here:
Touch, hear, see - and be amazed
Solve puzzles about your own senses
Perceive your own emotions and body reactions
Understanding perceptual phenomena
Ideal for school classes, workshops & project lessons
"The guests recognise in this area that everyone experiences their environment a little differently." - Dr Mareike Wiese, curator
Velvet paws.
... or why do your hands suddenly feel soft?
If you touch both wire meshes at the same time, a sensation arises that surprises many: Why does metal suddenly feel soft?
This sensation varies in intensity on the different wire meshes. Scientists are not sure exactly how this strange sensation comes about. They suspect that the contrast between the hard edges of the metal and the soft palm of the hand could be one reason.
A quiet but fascinating exhibit that invites you to feel it closely.
Fakir's night camp.
Test of courage on nail tips
A real classic - and yet a surprising experience every time: Who dares to stand on the nail bed? The many tips each bear only a tiny part of your body weight. This means you feel no pain, just even pressure. Pure physics - and a great moment of outgrowing yourself.
Ideal for
brave children
adults who like to experiment
Teaching topics "force distribution" and "pressure"
Twisted Mona Lisa.
Don't move... or do you?
If you look at the rotating spiral for a few seconds, the Mona Lisa next door comes to life:
She comes towards you
Or she retreats
Depending on the direction in which the spiral rotates
This movement simulation is called the waterfall effect. Our brain tries to compensate for a previously seen movement and thus creates an illusory movement.
"Our perception is very individual. It's amazing how differently the same experiments are perceived." - Dr Mareike Wiese

Our senses can deceive us - but that's exactly what makes the experience so exciting.
The area offers
numerous experiments on human perception
many child-friendly, self-explanatory stations
scientific backgrounds that can be used directly in the classroom
Opportunities for teamwork and reflection
Whether biology, psychology or interdisciplinary projects - Spürsinn is a perfect learning environment for the senses.
