20 YEARS OF PHAENO.

The Science Centre opens the next chapter of science enthusiasm.

phaeno celebrates grand reopening and 20th anniversary Wolfsburg - The Science Center phaeno is reopening its exhibition on 13 and 14 December after a comprehensive redesign and is also celebrating its 20th anniversary. After two years of project work and a seven-week closure phase, the centre is brighter, more modern and more clearly structured than ever before. Visitors can experience a varied programme on both days with free admission from 10 am to 6 pm.

The redesign includes 12 restructured themed areas, 200 revised and 50 new exhibits, including 8 iconic large exhibits. The aim was to consistently orientate the exhibition towards the future and to noticeably improve the visitor experience
. Around 4.8 million people have visited the phaeno since it opened in 2005.

New concept: openness, orientation and a stronger focus on the visitor experience

The exhibition focusses on clear pathways, light installations and new seating landscapes that create an open, warm atmosphere. The newly designed seating sculpture in the exhibition is a particular eye-catcher: the stepped structure is reminiscent
of a small amphitheatre and blends in strikingly with the striking architecture by Zaha Hadid. It serves as a meeting point, a place to linger and a visual landmark within the exhibition. Twelve newly designed areas - from maths magic to the digital world 12 newly structured areas invite visitors to try things out. The journey through the world of phenomena begins at the launch pad, the pulsating heart of phaeno, where the first experimentation with exhibits with easily recognisable effects sparks natural curiosity. From here, guests set off on their very own
journey through the exhibition to small and large interactive stations: For example, guests observe the new giant sine wave on the ceiling, seemingly change their size in the Ames Room, become a living installation themselves in the digital artwork "Moving Shadows" or discover climate phenomena in the new Planet A area. This is also where the new forum is located, where current topics are discussed and visitors are invited to express their own opinions.
The journey into the world of science is different for every guest and leads to their own "aha" experiences and completely new questions, so that once curiosity has been sparked, the journey never ends.

Start of an anniversary year full of events

The reopening marks the start of an anniversary year in which numerous special events are planned - from the phaenoBricks exhibition to the bubble festival in autumn 2026.

phaeno as part of the science and education landscape

For 20 years, phaeno has been one of the most important extracurricular learning centres in Lower Saxony. The Science Centre sees itself as a place where science and technology can be experienced directly - without prior knowledge, without barriers and for all generations. The extraordinary architecture by Zaha Hadid turns the building itself into an exhibit: a walk-in landscape that triggers amazement and creates an extraordinary setting for around 300 exhibits.

The reopening will take place on 13 and 14 December 2025, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free admission.
