The mathematics of juggling


In this lecture, Dr Alex Leymann will show how mathematics helps jugglers to understand and design juggling patterns. Alex will illustrate these rather abstract concepts directly during the lecture with live juggling.

Alex is 39 years old and comes from Kiel. He studied physics at the University of Greifswald and completed his doctorate at the University of Magdeburg. He then worked as a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden and at the Bose-Einstein Condensation Centre in Trento, Italy. He then worked as a scientific editor at the journal Nature Communications.


Today he is a scientific officer at the Federal Office for Radiation Protection in Cottbus. In addition to science, Alex has been juggling, performing and giving workshops for over 20 years. Juggling is a central part of his life outside of science and he works as a freelance juggler and communications coach.

Scientific work.


Alex has published over 20 scientific papers. His research focusses on the question of how complex quantum mechanical processes are influenced by their environment. To this end, he has developed computational methods for open quantum systems and applied them to microlasers and photonic Bose-Einstein condensates, always in close collaboration with experimental researchers.


Today, he supervises research into the health effects of electromagnetic fields for the Federal Office for Radiation Protection. Here he applies his expertise in open quantum systems to questions of quantum biology that are relevant to research into the mechanisms of action of electromagnetic fields. He also provides information on radiation protection in the field of electromagnetic fields.
